Auckland Super City - 108th Auckland Master Plumbers conference

The Auckland Master Plumbers, Gasfitters & Drainlayers Association is a trade association that was established in 1894.

The term Master has long been synonymous with tradespersons who have reached the highest qualification within their trade and have gone on to be self employed.

In history, by 1300AD, all trades and other skills had apprenticeships such as gold or silversmiths, weavers, felt-making and even apothecary. Every young boy would start his long apprenticeship, possibly in his fathers trade while his family would pay for the privilege of him learning the trade.

On completion of his time, on receiving his indentures, he had two choices; stay where he was as an employee with his old Master at his workplace, with the ability to move around the country earning a living, thus a "journeyman", or on his completion sit the guild exam, be judged by them to have passed, thereby allowing self employment.

From there he would continue to train and in time be recognised as a Master.

So how does a Plumber, Gasfitter or Drainlayer become a Master?

Master Plumbers, Gasfitter or Drainlayers are the most highly qualified trades people working in the plumbing industry. Each of them has spent four years in an apprenticeship and a further two years studying and working for their Craftsman Examination.

Some stop there, but many go on to gain experience in the industry and apply for membership of one of the 16 Master Plumber Associations throughout the country.

To earn membership they have to prove themselves competent to provide the highest level of service and workmanship even to the extent of allowing other Master Plumbers to inspect their work. Once becoming a member of one of these associations, they must adhere to a strict Code of Ethics to maintain their status as a Master Plumber.

Every Master Plumber is familiar with all local bylaws, regulations and requirements covering sanitary plumbing ,gas fitting, drainage and general plumbing work. They are also experienced in business practice, advising clients, performing work by contract, and employing staff.
